Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Rachel Williams, a standout player for the Union Catholic Vikings volleyball team. Rachel, has been a pivotal force for the Vikings, showcasing her exceptional skills and leadership on the court. Her journey in volleyball has been marked by numerous accolades and a relentless drive to excel, making her one of the most promising talents in New Jersey high school volleyball. In this week’s NJP Player Rater, she achieved a top 1% rating in the state of NJ.

In this interview, we will examine Rachel’s journey, her experiences, and her aspirations for the future. We will explore what drives her passion for volleyball, how she manages to excel in both academics and athletics, and what her goals are as she looks ahead to the next stages of her career. Join us as we get to know Rachel Williams, a remarkable athlete and an inspiring young woman.

Hi Rachel… Tell us about your family?

Overall, I have a big family: two older sisters, one younger sister, an older brother, my mom, and my stepdad. I love them to death. They’re my biggest supporters.

Tell us about what went into your decision to play D1 volleyball in college at Georgetown?

Choosing to play D1 volleyball at Georgetown was a combination of my love for the sport and the academic opportunities the university offers. Georgetown’s balance between athletics and academics stood out to me, and I felt it was the perfect place to grow both as a player and a student.

Which Union County opposing player were you most impressed with last season?

Last season, I was most impressed with Abby Kim from Union County. Her skills and sportsmanship on the court were admirable.

The Vikings are off to a blistering start. Which team do you expect to be your main competition for league honors?

The Vikings have started strong at 9-1. I think our main competition for league honors will be Kent Place. They have a solid team and always bring their A-game.

 In your 4-year high school career, you have put up some prolific statistics surpassing 500 kills last season.  What are your expectations for your senior campaign?

Surpassing UC 672 kills record. It was a huge milestone for me. I aim to exceed that number for my senior year which I did on Friday against Morristown. It would be a great accomplishment if I led my team to a state championship.

Tell us about your Union Catholic head coach, the legendary Nancy Saggio?

Coach Nancy Saggio has been instrumental in my development. Her experience and passion for the game have pushed me to be the best player I can be.

Is this the year UC can take down perennial private school teams like IHA, Paul VI, and Donovan Catholic?

This year, I believe UC has a strong chance to take down teams like IHA, Paul VI, and Donovan Catholic. We’ve been working hard and have a lot of depth in our roster.

Tell us about your teammates and some of the individuals that will contribute toward the Vikings success in 2024?

My teammates are incredible. Players like Ryan, who is our other outside hitter, and Nia, our libero, will be key contributors to our success this season.

What is your best memory of your high school career?

My best memory of high school volleyball has to be winning against Westfield at UC this season. The energy and excitement were unforgettable.

What professional field do you want to enter after college?

After college, I want to pursue a business career. 

Tell us about your volleyball club experience?

 Playing for the USANY volleyball club has been an amazing experience. It has allowed me to compete at a high level and improve my skills year-round.

Who is your role model?

My role model is my older sister. She played college volleyball and has always been a source of inspiration and support for me.

Tell us about your leadership style?

My leadership style is all about leading by example. I believe in working hard and staying positive, and I try to encourage my teammates to do the same.

What else would you like us to know about you?

I want people to know that I’m not just passionate about volleyball, but also how I love to bake. I love making sweet treats for my family and friends. 

What do you want to accomplish at Georgetown and for the Hoyas?

At Georgetown, I want to contribute to the team’s success and help bring home a Big East championship. I also aim to excel academically and prepare for a future business career.
