Hudson County Boys Volleyball Tournament Analysis: Seeding vs. Rankings Breakdown
The Hudson County Tournament is set to showcase the best high school volleyball talent in the region, but do the official seeds truly reflect team strength? Our proprietary ranking algorithm reveals some interesting discrepancies and potential upsets to watch for.
Top Seeds: A Tale of Two Rankings
Harrison earned the #1 seed with an impressive 13-0 record and dominance across the board. Their near perfect 26-1 set record and substantial +10.0 differential per set reinforces their position as the team to beat.
Hudson Catholic follows as the #2 seed, but their 12-0 perfect record and superior NJP ranking (2nd vs. Harrison’s 1st) suggests they might be equally formidable. Their +7.6 differential per set shows they’re consistently outplaying opponents by significant margins but their strength of schedule is not near Harrison.
Biggest Ranking Disparities
The most notable seeding vs. ranking discrepancies appear in the middle of the pack:
- Union City: Seeded 12th but ranked 9th by our algorithm, indicating they may be stronger than their position suggests
- Secaucus: Seeded 8th but ranked 6th in our system. Should breeze first round and be viable for 2nd round upset.
- Dickinson: Ranked 13th but seeded 16th, is positioned for a lopsided win for the play-in round.
Strength of Schedule Insights
Bayonne and North Bergen stands out with the highest Schedule Strength Factor (SSF). Their competitive differential suggests they perform well against tough competition.
Conversely, Beloved Charter received the lowest seed (17) with a challenging strength factor (12) and has struggled significantly with a differential of -10.8 per set, the lowest in the field.
First Round Matchups to Watch
Based on our analysis, first-round matchups could prove particularly interesting but we expect SPP, McNair, Memorial, and Union City to prevail, all in straight sets.
Tournament Dark Horses
Based on differential metrics and ranking positions, these teams could surprise:
- Kearny: With a solid +5.3 differential per set and strong 15-6 set record, they could challenge higher seeds. The Kardinals always show up strong in the County tournament and we expect them to challenge Hudson Catholic if they get to the semi-finals.
Championship Outlook
The data points to an eventual Harrison vs. Hudson Catholic final, which would showcase two undefeated teams with impressive statistical profiles. Harrison’s superior per-set differential (+10.0 vs. +7.6) gives them a slight edge, but Hudson Catholic’s perfect record against a slightly more challenging schedule makes this a potential classic match-up. Kearny will also battle to gain access to the Championship match.
