A Foundation Built on Excellence

Wilcock’s volleyball story began in the halls of Mendham High School, where she established herself as one of New Jersey’s premier indoor players. She was the only player from the state of New Jersey to make the AVCA All-Region team for her area, a list that only includes 14 players total from Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Her high school achievements were nothing short of spectacular, earning All-State honors while leading her team to a group championship and a spot in the finals of the New Jersey state Tournament of Champions.

Named MaxPreps’ best volleyball player from New Jersey, Wilcock’s talent was undeniable. But it was her venture into beach volleyball with Sinjin Beach that would truly set her apart, showcasing a level of athletic adaptability that few possess.

Conquering the Sand

Wilcock’s beach volleyball career was marked by consistent excellence and record-breaking performances across multiple prestigious programs. Her journey began at the University of South Carolina, where she immediately made history as a freshman.

Impressive first-year player at South Carolina made CCSA All-Freshman team

Wilcock’s team-high 24 wins as an individual put her just three behind Macie Tendrich’s single-season program record of 27 victories. More impressively, her 24 wins in 2022 matched the program record for a freshman, and her win total and .750 winning percentage for the season were both the best by a Gamecock freshman in program history.

Her freshman season achievements were recognized with multiple honors, including a spot on the CCSA All-Freshman Team and the AVCA Top Flight award. Wilcock made the CCSA’s five-woman All-Freshman team, making her just the third Gamecock in program history to make the list.

During her sophomore year at South Carolina, Wilcock continued her winning ways, going 17-8 overall for the year on a team that finished No. 17 in the country. She demonstrated remarkable versatility by posting at least one win while playing positions No. 2 through No. 5, and tied for the team lead with seven wins over ranked opponents.

Northwestern Success

Wilcock’s transfer to the University of Washington marked another chapter of excellence in her beach volleyball career. In 2024, as a junior, she reached new heights of success, recording the fourth most wins in a single season with 23 victories. Paired with Zoey Henson, the duo achieved the second most wins by a pair in a single season with 21 victories, while also ranking fifth for most wins by a pair in career history.

Fantastic record for the Huskies in 2023 and 2024

Their dominance was evident throughout the season as they remained undefeated against Central Arkansas and Houston Christian, swept Central Arkansas in two sets, and defeated highly ranked opponents including No. 14 Grand Canyon, No. 9 Long Beach, and No. 19 Arizona. Perhaps most notably, they won four straight matches against elite competition: No. 12 Arizona State, No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 California, and Oregon during the Pac-12 North Tournament.

The season culminated with a victory over Florida State in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship tournament, cementing Wilcock’s status as one of the premier beach volleyball players in the nation.

A Bold New Chapter

Now, as a graduate student at Rutgers University, Wilcock embarks on perhaps her most challenging transition yet, returning to indoor volleyball in one of the most competitive conferences in college athletics. The Big Ten Conference represents the pinnacle of collegiate volleyball, featuring powerhouse programs and elite-level competition week after week.

The Big Ten champion will receive the conference’s automatic qualifier to the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which will be played Dec. 4-21, culminating with the national semifinals and championship match on Dec. 18 & 21 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

The Full Circle Moment

Wilcock’s return to indoor volleyball represents more than just a positional change. It’s a testament to her athletic courage and competitive spirit. Few athletes would voluntarily step away from a sport where they’ve achieved national recognition to start anew in a different discipline, especially at the highest collegiate level. Laura shared, “This transition from beach to indoor has not been easy. It’s given me a new challenge that I have been excited to take on, but it has taken a lot of hard work and determination.”

The journey is not all about volleyball as Lauren is thinking beyond her playing days. “I’ll be getting my Master’s in Biomedical Sciences while competing this fall. I’m lucky to have such great support from my coaches and teammates. All of them have taught me so much and welcomed me with open arms.”

Her journey from the beaches of South Carolina and Washington to the hardwood of Rutgers demonstrates the kind of athletic versatility and mental toughness that defines truly special competitors. With her proven track record of adapting to new environments and excelling under pressure, Wilcock brings invaluable experience and leadership to a Rutgers program competing in the demanding Big Ten Conference.

Her story serves as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere, a reminder that with dedication, adaptability, and courage, new chapters of excellence are always possible.

Laura’s enthusiasm is contagious. “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to compete in the big10 on the indoor court and can’t wait to see what this season has to offer! I’m ready for this team to show everyone what we have been working toward!” For a young woman from Mendham who once dominated New Jersey high school volleyball, Lauren Wilcock’s journey has come full circle in the most extraordinary way possible. The sand may have shaped her into a champion, but the hardwood awaits to witness the next chapter of her remarkable athletic story.
