We would absolutely love to say we are off to a great start with team and individual statistics being entered with a high level of accuracy. But, we can not!

The first week of stat collection has seen numerous rough spots with some impossible scenarios as well as many unlikely ones. Hey, we get it. Finding great scorekeepers at the high school level, whether volunteers or coaches is a pretty big task knowing the enormity of other work and focus on your plates. Volunteers often to not have the technical education to succeed in the role. For many years we have tried to do individual outreach to team coaches or suspend teams individual stats in our presentations until blatant issues get resolved. But it’s a really tough situation. We have published several articles on how to keep basic stats but it has not moved the needle. NJ volleyball has gotten too good at the high school to have substandard stat keeping. It effects the integrity of our players portfolios when they enter college as well as misses opportunity for player development using the real numbers. We would LOVE to see a stepped effort to provide the education needed to have accurate records. The new PowerStats Academy was developed after watching many years of disjointed data being submitted. Here is a sample from tonight’s games that clearly show the problem:

STAT-SAMPLES-091025

These examples have nothing to do with the players. They don’t keep the stats. And its not an indictment against the many volunteers who contribute their time to try to help their teams. Like any job or students situation, we like to set people up for success. The right training can make all the difference.

As shown by the examples, many teams are not entering service points or sets played. Some have misconceptions on the what each stat category represents. We see situation where aces are higher than service points. Where assists are higher than kills. Where kills, blocks, and aces totaled are higher than the points scored by a team in a match. We also see crazy dig amounts which typically reflect counting serve receive as digs incorrectly. And we see high block totals which clearly indicate a misunderstanding of what a block is per the statistical definition.

It seems like the situation is getting worse rather than better. Many teams should be thinking about sending their scorekeepers to this online Academy. It is LIVE as of 9/12/25. Let’s make a difference in the quality of the data and make NJ the highest standard in volleyball AND statistical accuracy.
