Few achievements carry the weight and significance of a coach’s 600th victory. Tonight, Williamstown Head Coach Chris Sheppard achieved this extraordinary milestone, cementing his place among the most successful coaches in New Jersey and adding another golden chapter to an already legendary career.

This historic victory represents far more than a simple tally in the win column. It embodies nearly three decades of unwavering dedication, countless hours in the gym, and an unshakeable belief in the transformative power of athletics. Coach Sheppard’s journey to 600 wins tells the story of a mentor who has shaped not just volleyball players, but entire generations of young women who have passed through the Williamstown program.
The path to this milestone began in 1998, when Sheppard took over a program that would become the pride of Williamstown High School. What started as a leap of faith for a part-time physical education teacher and bartender who simply wanted to volunteer as a coach has blossomed into one of the most dominant programs in South Jersey volleyball history.
Sheppard’s entry into volleyball coaching was serendipitous. Originally hoping to coach baseball or soccer at his alma mater, he found himself redirected to softball as a volunteer assistant, then ultimately to volleyball when the school decided to start a girls’ program. “I never thought I’d coach girls’ sports because I played guys’ sports,” Sheppard once reflected, “but it opened up a whole new world.”
What sets Coach Sheppard apart is his holistic approach to building a program. Under his leadership, Williamstown volleyball has achieved remarkable success: Six State Titles, the first came back in 2006, then others in 2010, 2012, 2019, and 2021, when the Braves had a perfect record and won the Tournament of Champions, (which has since been discontinued) and in 2025. Williamstown also achieved an incredible streak of 15 consecutive conference titles from 2001 to 2015 under his leadership. Yet for Sheppard, the victories and banners tell only part of the story.
His commitment to honoring every player who contributes to the program’s success is evident in the plastic banners that line the hallway from the gym to the locker room, listing not just team accomplishments but individual players who were integral to those achievements. “Just because you play in the program doesn’t mean you automatically get onto these,” Sheppard explains, “but we have these so, in 10 or 20 years, they can come back and look at this and show it to someone knowing they made a contribution.”

The Williamstown volleyball family extends far beyond the current roster. When Sheppard reached his 400th victory in 2017, he created a group text that went to 180 former players and parents, letting them know they were still in his thoughts and part of his journey.
Sheppard’s philosophy centers on maintaining consistent excellence regardless of roster changes. “We don’t rebuild,” he emphasizes. “We don’t lower the expectations. Here’s the bar, and we have to get to it.” This approach has kept Williamstown competitive year after year, creating a culture where success is expected, not hoped for.
The results speak volumes about his coaching acumen. Recent seasons have produced perfect records, including a remarkable 37-0 campaign, demonstrating his ability to develop talent and maximize potential across different generations of players.
For Sheppard, the program’s success transcends individual recognition. “It’s not about me,” he insists. “It’s about expanding to the kids and families and everyone who comes through here. To me, we call the Williamstown Braves family.”
Tonight’s 600th victory represents the culmination of relationships built over nearly three decades. It reflects the trust parents have placed in Coach Sheppard to guide their daughters, the dedication of players who bought into his system, and the unwavering support of a community that recognizes true excellence. Each of those 600 wins carries memories of breakthrough moments, comeback victories, and young athletes discovering capabilities they never knew they possessed.
As Coach Sheppard stands among the elite coaches in New Jersey volleyball history, his 600th victory serves as both celebration and inspiration. It reminds us that sustained excellence requires more than tactical knowledge; it demands passion, persistence, and an unwavering commitment to developing young people both as athletes and individuals.
The journey to 600 wins may be complete, but for Coach Sheppard, the most important work continues. Tomorrow, he will return to practice, ready to teach, mentor, and inspire the next generation of Williamstown volleyball players, ensuring that the Braves family tradition continues to flourish for years to come.
Congratulations, Coach Sheppard, on this remarkable achievement. Your 600th victory is not just a personal triumph, but a testament to everyone whose life you have touched along the way.
