As week 4 of the NJ HS volleyball season winds down tomorrow and Saturday, here are some notable recaps from Thursday night’s action…
Fifth-ranked Demarest (6-1) rallied from an opening set loss to defeat Tenafly (4-4) with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-16 comeback victory to improve to 4-1 in Big North National Division play. Maya Snir orchestrated the resurgence with an outstanding 26 assists, while Deana Finkelstein powered the attack with 11 kills and Elizaveta Fishbeyn anchored the defense with 4 blocks as Demarest accumulated 32 kills in the three-set triumph. Demarest also received contributions from Schuyler Berenbroick with 9 kills, Elizaveta Fishbeyn with 7 kills, and Alyssa Dimitriades with 6 digs as they outscored Tenafly 50-30 over the final two sets after dropping the opener. Tenafly drops to 3-2 in conference standings despite their strong opening-set performance, unable to sustain their early momentum against Demarest’s balanced offensive attack that controlled the final two frames of this competitive Big North National Division matchup.
North Hunterdon (5-5) bounced back from their recent struggles with a dominant 25-12, 25-14 sweep over Hillsborough (6-4) to improve to 4-2 in Skyland Delaware Division play. Kat Wolf led the Lions with 6 kills, while Eva Liu distributed with 7 assists and Keegan Hissner anchored the defense with 7 digs as North Hunterdon accumulated 20 kills in the lopsided victory. The serving advantage proved overwhelming for North Hunterdon, who recorded 13 aces, with Wolf contributing 8 aces and Hissner adding 2 more to create constant disruption throughout both sets. Hillsborough drops to 2-4 in conference standings. North Hunterdon’s relentless serving attack and balanced offensive effort that controlled the match from start to finish.
The mismatch was evident from the opening serve as top-ranked Paul VI (9-0) overwhelmed overmatched Sterling (4-6), winning 25-6, 25-8 to extend their Olympic Patriot Division dominance to 5-0. Sterling managed barely a dozen total points across both sets, with Paul VI’s serving barrage creating 9 aces that left their opponents scrambling throughout the brief encounter. Maggie Carcillo controlled the tempo with 17 assists and 5 aces while Megan Evans efficiently contributed 7 kills as the Eagles never faced a serious challenge. The victory marked another step in Paul VI’s march toward the postseason, though this lopsided affair provided little preparation for the elite competition awaiting them in tournament play. Sterling remains winless in conference action at 0-5, continuing their difficult season against the division’s stronger programs.
Second-ranked Williamstown (9-0) maintained their perfect season with a 26-24, 25-18 victory over Kingsway (7-2) to stay unblemished at 3-0 in Tri-County Royal Division play. Khloe Lynch orchestrated the Braves’ balanced attack with 20 assists, while Addilyn Belcher contributed 8 kills and 3 blocks and Peyton Wright added 7 kills as Williamstown accumulated 20 kills in the straight-set triumph. The serving disparity proved crucial, as Williamstown recorded 7 aces compared to 3 for Kingsway, with Wright contributing 7 aces and Lynch adding 2 more to maintain pressure throughout both closely contested sets. Kingsway battled hard behind Ava Patterson’s 8 kills and Sophie Park’s 17 assists, managing 16 kills overall, but drops to 2-1 in conference standings as Williamstown controlled the key moments to preserve their unbeaten record.
Old Tappan (6-2) rolled past struggling Teaneck (1-6) in routine fashion, posting a 25-21, 25-12 sweep that solidified their 4-1 standing in Big North National Division play. Bianca Benasillo paced the Golden Knights with 9 kills while Joley Giordano facilitated with 12 assists, as Old Tappan methodically pulled away after a competitive first set. The second frame told the real story, with Old Tappan outscoring their hosts 25-12 behind balanced contributions from Julia Whaley with 7 kills and Maya Fernandez with 5 digs. Nadine Whaley added 2 blocks at the net as the visitors accumulated 20 kills while limiting Teaneck to minimal resistance. For winless Teaneck, now 0-4 in conference action, the loss continues a challenging campaign against the division’s more established programs as they search for their breakthrough moment.
After dropping a tight opener, Bridgewater-Raritan (9-3) found their rhythm to sweep the final set and defeat Hunterdon Central (6-2) by scores of 25-22, 25-18 in Skyland Delaware Division action. The victory evens Bridgewater-Raritan’s conference record at 3-3 while dropping Hunterdon Central to 4-2 in what proved to be a pivotal divisional matchup. Jahniah Bishop anchored the Panthers’ front line with 6 kills, supported by Ella Sorenson’s steady 14 assists that kept the offense flowing smoothly throughout both sets. Ava Marvuglio contributed 5 kills while Molly Magner provided 3 kills and 2 blocks in the balanced attack that totaled 20 kills. The serving battle remained close with both teams recording 4 aces each, but Bridgewater-Raritan executed better in crucial moments to pull away in the second set after the competitive opener. Hunterdon Central absorbed a conference loss that could impact their seeding heading into the postseason.
