Here are some Saturday recaps:
What a crazy up and down season for North Hunterdon. They came up big at home with a thrilling three–set victory over powerhouse Westfield, improving their record to 6-6 overall. The Lions were led by senior outside hitter Kat Wolf, who was unstoppable at the net with a match-high 10 kills and added 7 digs and 5 aces to fuel the offense. Setter Eva Liu kept the attack flowing with 11 assists and chipped in 5 digs, while libero Keegan Hissner was outstanding on defense, posting 13 digs across the three sets. North Hunterdon showed poise after narrowly dropping the first set 26-24, bouncing back with decisive play in the second and a gritty 27-25 finish in the third to seal the win. Despite the loss, Westfield, now 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the UCC Watchung division, proved why they are one of the top programs in New Jersey. The Blue Devils pushed North Hunterdon to the brink in both the first and third sets, keeping the energy high throughout the match. Westfield’s depth and competitive spirit were evident, and this setback will likely serve as a valuable test as they continue their strong season. With players like Wolf, Liu, Hissner, and McDevitt all stepping up for North Hunterdon, and Westfield continuing to show resilience, both squads look ready to make noise as the season heads into its midpoint.
River Dell showcased their strength in a hard-fought four–set win over Fair Lawn, improving to 8-1 on the season. The Golden Hawks were led by an outstanding performance from Cara Lee, who tallied 21 kills and 18 digs while adding 3 aces to dominate both offensively and defensively. Setter Kai Grebla was excellent in orchestrating the attack, racking up 36 assists and keeping the River Dell offense in rhythm. Supporting the charge was Marissa Petrocelli with 18 kills and 14 digs, giving the Hawks another reliable weapon at the net. The balanced effort, capped by strong serving from multiple players, allowed River Dell to close out two nail-biting extra-point sets in the second and fourth frames. Fair Lawn, now 6-4, proved they were every bit a worthy challenger in this battle. Isabella Castillo was spectacular with 20 kills and 14 digs while also serving 2 aces, showing her ability to impact every phase of the game. Setter Jeanelle Jardiolin handed out 27 assists and added 7 digs, while libero Leila Harty anchored the back row with 31 digs and 3 aces to keep rallies alive. Lior Grinstein was a force at the net with 8 kills and 3 blocks, and Anastasia Kopchuk chipped in 12 kills and 12 digs. Though Fair Lawn came up just short, their effort and balanced play signal that they will be a contender as the season progresses.
St. John Vianney delivered a commanding performance in a straight-set sweep over Southern, improving to 10-1 on the year. The Lancers were in control from start to finish, fueled by Daria Shnarevich, who led all players with 13 kills. Setter Ayana Warren was outstanding in directing the offense, recording 30 assists along with 7 digs and 2 aces. Amelia Moro anchored the net with 8 kills and a match-high 4 blocks, while Genevieve Millett added 10 kills and 6 digs to give St. John Vianney multiple scoring options. Defensive specialist Giavanna Sergi was a standout in the back row with 19 digs and 4 aces, providing stability and energy that helped the Lancers close each set with authority. For Southern, now 10-4, it was a difficult matchup against one of the top programs in the Shore Conference. While the Rams couldn’t generate the momentum needed to push back against St. John Vianney, the contest gave valuable experience as they continue to navigate a challenging schedule. With their strong tradition and depth, Southern will look to regroup quickly, using this match as fuel for the next stretch of their season.
Paul VI stayed unbeaten with a strong four–set victory over New York power Poly Prep (NY), moving to 10-0 on the season. The Eagles came out sharp in the opening set and, after dropping a close second, regrouped with dominant play in sets three and four to seal the match. With consistent serving, smart setting, and balanced attacking, Paul VI showed the depth and composure that has defined their perfect start.
