Tonights schedule recap:
We will start tonight with what we believe is a pretty big upset but for those in the GMC, it’s probably just another grueling conference rivalry twist. The Monroe Falcons upended the undefeated Old Bridge Knights today with a straight set win powered by the defensive prowess of Allison Nieves and a well rounded attach orchestrated by setters Alyssa Grau and Lindsay Harrington. Ava Kwitkoski lead a group of 7 players who contributed kills with 4. OB still holds the slight edge for division honors.
In another upset, Tenafly is no longer unbeaten as they were taken down by Old Tappan in three sets. It was the first loss for the Tigers who fall to 13-1 with Old Tappan rising to 11-4 overall. Sam Kranzler was the big star for the Knights as she slammed 22 kills for the winners.
We would like to recognize a team we have not spent a lot of time covering this year. Timothy Christian is undefeated so far this season at 8-0. They have had a wonderful youth infusion to meld with their upperclassman and have navigated the season thus far unscathed. Freshman setter Emma Pratt has stormed on to the varsity squad and brought versatility and leadership despite her young age. Her favorite target this season has been sophomore outside Holly Medina. Medina leads the Tigers with 65 kills thus far in 8 matches. Emma, a prospect of CORE Volleyball Academy, has stepped right in after the void of graduating Ariele Acevedo this summer. Seniors Hannah McNulty and Hailee Medina as well as junior Aliyah Hobbs have formulated a winning combination in the GMC-Blue. Congrats to the Tigers on such a great start.
Pinelands, coming off a nice performance this weekend against some of the states best despite going 1-2, continued their winning ways against Cedar Creek today in a convincing manner. They had many solid performances tonight but we will note 6 aces from Madison Houseworth, 12 digs from Eva Pollak, and 4 kills from Olivia Benson. Pinelands has packed their schedule down the stretch with high expectations of success. Later this week they will face Donovan Catholic, Old Bridge, and Williamstown to go along with their top level quad performance this past weekend.
Whenever a team has to visit the Panthers in Bridgewater-Raritan over the years, it is never an easy task. The 5-8 Panthers come up with a big upset today as they hand Livingston their second loss of the season and second loss in their last 4 matches. BR overwhelmed the Lancers from start to finish today taking the first set 25-12 and finishing off the night cap at 25-18. Isabel Rivera slammed 9 kills and lifted 8 digs, Madison Patton had 3 blocks and 5 kills, and Vasi Papanastasiou had 20 digs along with 3 kills and an ace. Nikki Blair, who is having a great senior campaign, had 17 assists, 3 kills and an ace for the winners. Julianna Consolazio also added 2 blocks and three kills for the Panthers.
