10/16/25

The undefeated Paul VI Eagles faced their biggest challenge of the season on Thursday evening, surviving a determined effort from Washington Township in a tight three-set road victory, 21-25, 26-24, 25-19. The match marked the first time all season that Paul VI was pushed to a decisive third set, as Township came within two points of pulling off a major upset of New Jersey’s top-ranked team.

The Eagles, now 19-0 overall and 8-0 in the Olympic Conference, Patriot Division, extended their perfect record, but the visiting side had to grind through one of the most competitive matches of their 2025 campaign. Washington Township, entering at 12-8 overall and 4-4 in the Tri-County Conference, Royal Division, nearly handed Paul VI its first loss of the season with a strong opening performance and relentless defensive pressure throughout.

Township Strikes First

Washington Township opened the match confidently on its home court, taking the first set 25-21. The Minutemaids’ balanced attack featured effective contributions from multiple hitters, led by junior outside hitter Campbell Basu, who recorded a team-high 11 kills and added 8 digs, 2 aces, and 1 block. Township’s early rhythm on serve receive and transition offense allowed them to control momentum for much of the opening set, handing Paul VI just its fourth dropped set of the season.

Paul VI Responds in the Second

Facing their first true deficit, Paul VI regrouped in Set 2. The Eagles found steadier offensive footing through senior outside hitter Megan Evans, who tallied a match-high 13 kills to go along with 6 digs and 3 aces. Setter Maggie Carcillo orchestrated the offense with 16 assists, 7 digs, and 2 aces, guiding the Eagles to a narrow 26-24 second-set win that leveled the match.

The set statistics reflected just how close the competition became. Paul VI and Washington Township finished the frame separated by only two points, and both teams produced nearly identical totals in kills and digs across extended rallies. The back-and-forth nature of the second set made it the most tightly contested frame of the Eagles’ season to date.

Eagles Hold Steady in the Third

With the match tied at one set apiece, Paul VI finally established separation in the third. The Eagles capitalized on their serving depth, generating 14 total aces in the match compared to Township’s 15. Although Township continued to apply pressure from the service line, led by Rilynn Thomas with 6 aces and Leah Woyciechowski with 3, Paul VI’s consistency in side-out play allowed them to close the match 25-19.

Amelia Reagan provided a key spark for the visitors with 11 kills, while Brynn Casmay added 4 digs and 2 aces in the back row. Sioni Adeniran, Kam Wertz, and Marlee Goings contributed defensively at the net, combining for 4 blocks. Collectively, Paul VI totaled 31 kills and 32 digs on the night, supported by 31 assists across the rotation.

Basu Leads Township’s Balanced Effort

Washington Township’s effort was anchored by junior outside hitter Campbell Basu, who once again demonstrated why she has become one of South Jersey’s top two-way players. Her 11 kills accounted for more than one-third of Township’s total offense, while she also led the team in digs. Basu’s ability to handle first contact and transition to attack gave Township the stability to hang with the top-ranked Eagles for much of the match.

Junior Campbell Basu has made a major impact for Washington Township and is approaching 500 career kills, 350 career digs, and 100 career aces in her third year.

Supporting Basu, setter Mia Panico distributed the offense effectively, registering a match-high 23 assists and adding 7 digs. Leah Woyciechowski contributed 9 kills, 3 aces, and 3 digs, while Vienna Mascieri chipped in with 3 kills and 3 aces. The Minutemaids matched Paul VI statistically in several key categories, finishing with 27 kills, 29 assists, and 15 aces.

A Benchmark Match for Both Teams

For Paul VI, the victory preserved their unblemished record and further solidified their position atop the statewide rankings. However, the narrow margin of victory also offered a reminder that every team can be tested, even the best in the state. The Eagles had dropped just five sets all season entering the night and had not been taken to a third set since early September.

For Washington Township, the performance, though falling just short of the upset, reflected steady growth through the season’s second half. The Minutemaids, who compete in one of South Jersey’s most competitive conferences, demonstrated that they can compete with any opponent when their serve and first-ball contact are strong. Township’s defensive coverage, paired with Basu’s offensive leadership, kept them within striking distance in all three sets.

Looking Ahead

Paul VI’s quest for an undefeated season will cross paths with the 16-2 Princeton Tigers on Wednesday night. Princeton endured a very tough weekend receiving their first two losses to blemish their undefeated season. Williamstown and Old Bridge powered past the Tigers and now it will be the Eagles turn to see of they can down the defending Champs. This will be a major test for Paul VI as the can feel Williamstown breathing down their necks in the computer ranking, edging closer as each week is passing.

Washington Township, meanwhile, remains firmly positioned for postseason contention in the Tri-County Conference. Their ability to push Paul VI to the brink is likely to raise their overall ranking. For Basu and Panico, both juniors, the experience of going point-for-point with one of the state’s elite programs may prove invaluable for their 2026 campaign.

The match will likely stand as one of the defining regular-season battles in South Jersey volleyball this fall, a contest where the state’s top-ranked program met a fearless challenger that refused to back down.
