Picking the NJ High School Player of the Year before the season starts is a tall order. With well over 300 high school girls volleyball programs and well over 5,000 players, it’s a bit daunting. And there are also so many top quality players to choose from, it becomes a process not much better than using a dart board. But let’s look at some of the history to help us out. Maybe there are some patterns that can make this a bit more predictable.

Anna Morris (Immaculate Heart) 2x NJ Player of the Year

Over the time period noted (past 17 years), 71% of the Players of the Year chosen were from the eventual Tournament of Champions victor and another 18% were from a team that made it to the Tournament of Champions. So roughly 90% were from teams that won sectional titles. So we will look at the NJP Pre-season rankings when selecting players from teams expected to get to the TOC. All past players chosen were juniors or seniors with just one exception, three time winner Nia Reed who went on to an amazing cvollegiate career at Penn State after her high school graduation from Immaculate Heart.

Simrin Carlsen (JPS)

Also thrown in are some potential players who can break the mold on a lower ranked team. We are also weighing pin hitters and middles stronger than setters and libs based on frequency of prior awards. So here are our candidates…

(Note that Lauren Wilcock would have been one of the top favorites to win this award but the top beach player is not returning for her senior campaign)
